Congratulations to Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura for winning the first leg of the FIDE Grand Prix in Berlin. Not only did he claim the €24,000 (app. $27,000) top prize, Hikaru is well on his way to securing one of the two remaining spots in the Candidates Tournament which will be held in Madrid in June. The winner of the Candidates goes on to challenge the World Champion.
The win came after a spectacular round of tie-breaks over Levon Aronian, the Armenia grandmaster who last year transferred to playing for the United States.
