The saying that “every cloud has a silver lining” came true for the NSCF when we were invited to host in-person chess tournaments at The Hudson in Inwood Park. Sunil Weeramantry used to teach chess to restaurateur Jimmy Goldman’s son, Dylan. When Sunil shared that the schools where we usually held events were closed to tournaments due to COVID, Jimmy suggested that the greenhouse at The Hudson might be a workable alternative. Open air, but protected from the elements, and with heaters to counter the chill, we held our first “Quads at the Hudson” on November 15, 2020 for just 36 players. Parents and players were thrilled.
On May 2, 2021, we were able to return for a second Quads tournament. New guidance from New York City’s Health and Parks Departments, allowed us to increase our player capacity to 60. With spectacular views, awesome food, and even sunny weather, families again appreciated having the option for in-person chess competition. The Quads format allowed us to limit contact while the spacious playing area with only 1 board per table allowed for social distancing. And even though we were only able to add a few more players, it was important in keeping with the NSCF’s mission that we offer opportunities to our newest players, as well as our aspiring future masters. To create a greater awareness of the benefits of scholastic chess, on Sunday, May 16, the NSCF and The Hudson hosted a free chess class and open play for some children in the Inwood and Washington Heights community. Sunil, our executive director and a FIDE Master, led the instruction and even played a few games. He was ably assisted by one of his former students, Dylan Slowik, now an 11th grader at Hunter who was happy to earn some community service hours and help the NSCF.
Our third Quads at the Hudson took place on Sunday, June 6 and once again was a great event. Even as we have been able to return to indoor events, we will always be grateful to Mr. Goldman and his wonderful staff for helping us provide scholastic chess competitions for our students during otherwise uncertain times.
